For many people getting at least six hours of sleep each night is a luxury. According to a survey conducted in 2017, about 40% of Americans report getting less than the ideal amount of sleep. In this blog I will talk about what is a sleep cycle, how it’s important and how CBD oil can come into play for helping you with better sleep.
Why is sleep important?
Sleep helps our bodies recuperate and recover from life’s daily stressors. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, chi moves through us in the same 24-hour cycle. This energy flows through our 12 main meridians or energetic pathways, in two-hour blocks. It spends two hours in each of our organs and there are certain things we can do at specific times to catch the cosmic momentum and thereby increase our health and happiness. Between the hours of 1-3am this energy is within the liver, which is a major detox organ. Not getting enough rest during this time can have a compounded effect on our internal systems. In addition, between the hours of 11pm-1am this energy resides within the gallbladder where unconscious problem solving is engaged. Have you ever woken up from a good nights rest and dreamt of a solution to a problem?
What is a sleep cycle?
Sleep is complicated. There are five stages of the sleep cycle. Stages 1-4 fall within non-rapid eye movement (NREM), while stage 5 is the rapid eye movement (REM) phase. This sleep cycle lasts about 90 minutes. Over the course of the night, the amount of time we spend in NREM and Rem stages shifts. Undisturbed sleep is essential. Between 4-6 consecutive cycles is the optimal duration over a 24 hour period.
CBD oil and CBD for sleep?
Mental health issues such as post-traumatic stress disorder and depression can certainly keep someone awake. But most adults who suffer from chronic insomnia or if you’re like me, the occasional nights when I have trouble falling asleep, are due to rumination that keep me tossing and turning at night. Intriguingly, recent research suggests that CBD oil can help relieve some of the tension, rumination, and feelings of nervousness that cause and/or contribute to insomnia. The 2019 study observed 72 participants, after taking 25mg of CBD capsules each night, 79.2% of participants experienced a drop in anxiety levels after the first month. Meanwhile 66.7% of them noted an improvement in their sleeping habits.
Further, a 2014 study conduced on both animals and humans revealed that CBD oil could promote wakefulness throughout the day. It also helped to reduce grogginess and daytime sleepiness, which many of us suffer from but pass off as normal occurrences.
What CBD should I take?
Oral and sublingual CBD oil will almost always be more effective for sleep than topical CBD. Just like melatonin or sleeping pills, consuming CBD oil allows it to enter the bloodstream. See blog post on bioavailability.
If you want to give CBD for sleep a try, start with Maeve 1000mg CBD oil, each 0.75ml (measured by marked dropper) gives you the recommended 25mg of CBD. You can either take it once a day in the evening or microdose 0.25ml of CBD x 3 times a day.
